Acid spray victim “may have known assailant” who seriously injured him in hospital

A man who has had acid thrown in his face in a secluded beauty spot may have known or be familiar with his attacker, according to MEN.

The horror unfolded around 8:15 p.m. Sunday night in the small parking lot next to the Ogden Reservoir in Newhey, Rochdale, when the man in his 30s had the substance dumped.

He was taken to hospital with injuries to his face and arm, which are serious but not life threatening. He remains in the hospital.

The car park adjoins a small number of cottages opposite the old Moulin de Printemps in a very small village.

A woman, who was visiting her daughter in the village, told MEN: “We heard that there had been an acid attack.

“It’s not the sort of thing you would expect in a lovely place like this. It’s awful.”

The MEN understands that one avenue of investigation is that the victim was known to his attacker.

Detectives don’t believe this was a random assault.

Officers were turning back cars trying to access the village – unless they were residents – and the Bulls Head on Lane Bottom, which is about 500 yards from the scene of the attack.

Meanwhile, “harm reduction” experts appeared to be packing some items for review.

In a statement, a spokesperson for GMP said: “Officers were called in to report an assault on Ogden Lane in Newhey just after 8:15 pm last night (December 19, 2021).

“A man in his 30s was sprayed with a suspected acidic substance in his face.

“Emergency services responded and the man was rushed to hospital where he remains with injuries to his arm and face.
