The car park adjoins a small number of cottages opposite the old Moulin de Printemps in a very small village.

A woman, who was visiting her daughter in the village, told MEN: “We heard that there had been an acid attack.

“It’s not the sort of thing you would expect in a lovely place like this. It’s awful.”

The MEN understands that one avenue of investigation is that the victim was known to his attacker.

Detectives don’t believe this was a random assault.

Officers were turning back cars trying to access the village – unless they were residents – and the Bulls Head on Lane Bottom, which is about 500 yards from the scene of the attack.

Meanwhile, “harm reduction” experts appeared to be packing some items for review.
