Composed Carpenter impresses on Car Park debut
Jean Charpentier picked up the win in his first-ever competitive boxing match at Sheffield Arena Car Park on Friday night.
The Clondalkin native, with no experience in amateur or combat sports, mocked his status as a “complete novice” with a comfortable points victory on the Fightzone card in England.
The fighter some joked may look more comfortable fighting in a parking lot than a ring in a parking lot looked comfortable, confident and capable as he headed for a 40- win. 36.
Granted, there are things that need to be improved upon, but no more than most newbies if you were to leave Friday’s posting.
Indeed, Carpenter seems an exciting addition to the super middleweight and light heavyweight division at the national level. He showed enough for Irish fight fans to predict entertaining fights could be staged with Irish boxing trio Robert Burke, Kevin Cronin and Jamie Morrissey as well as Taylor McGoldrick.
It’s a winning start for John Carpenter
The Dubliner with no amateur boxing experience showed a lot of potential in a points win (40-36) over Manchester’s Ryan Hibbert
Congratulations on the victory Mr Coffey 👏👏

Carpenter looked calm and confident in the first round. The new pro at the game took his time trying to land the jab by moving from a distance – and when the right hand landed, it knocked the mate off balance.
The Clondalkin native forced the problem a bit more in the second round. The 26-year-old applied pressure with his feet and let go of his hands more evenly. He used a solid jab to push Hibbert back to the ropes and let go of his right hand when he got there.
Hibbert held his feet better in the third and Carpenter had to show his defensive sense on occasion, but did more than enough to win the round comfortably.
The carpenter who had been whispered on the circuit emerged in the fourth with aggression and heavy hands on the round.
The Pete Taylor-trained fighter opted for volume shutdown early on and with a little more experience he may have gotten it, but before landing clean and injuring the English fighter over the last two minutes, flirting with an early morning night repeatedly.
The victory sees Carpenter go 1-0 while Hibbert slips to 1-11.
