Cornwall Council owned car parks to start charging
All Cornwall municipal parking lots, which were free to support main streets when they got back to business, will reintroduce a charge from next week.
The council will keep its parking lots free until May 17 to support high streets, with businesses such as non-essential stores, hairdressers and outdoor hotels reopening. But from then on, the charges will be reintroduced.
Cornwall Council suspended parking fees at the start of the lockdown in January to limit the spread of the coronavirus and help people working from home find parking.
The plan is to resume charge on May 17, in line with the government’s roadmap to emerge from the lockdown.
The council will no longer recognize the government-issued NHS free parking pass in its parking lots from May 17.
Resident ID card and traffic disruption: what to expect in Cornwall during the G7
The council says this is because it has implemented its own healthcare parking permit program, with more than 2,500 permits already issued to healthcare professionals working in our communities.
These permits allow the holder to park safely on the yellow lines, thus maximizing the time spent providing care to local residents in their homes.
