Letter to the editor: Sharing our beautiful county
Door County is a major tourist area. We know it, and most of us buy into it and get our income from it. I, too, as an entrepreneur who lives in Sevastopol and works on the access of water supply to this resource, our greatest here.
An ever-changing trend is Short Term Rental (STR), a hospitality concept that allows people to stay in local housing units and allows families to stay together for a memorable Door County experience.
However, let me underline the word “short”. The majority of tourists – people who, by the way, have no voice or voice in local government – stay for a short period, three to four days on average. This rental trend allows existing and new landlords to supplement their income, which is used to hire contractors like me, create jobs and increase income in our community through room taxes. The city of Sevastopol wants to limit STRs to one stay every six days, probably ending most STRs in our canton.
I understand that some people don’t like increased usage in their neighborhood due to parking, noise and water quality issues. But let me clarify one thing: All responsible owners are concerned about this. Let’s discuss the specific and infrequent cases in which any the owner is irresponsible, without distinguishing the DOS. Let’s talk about new methods of enforcement and accountability.
For example, I don’t particularly like the farmer who just spreads manure in the neighboring field; however, I know that through the efforts of Rep. Joel Kitchens and others, he has to follow specific guidelines to release it. These efforts protect the quality of our water, allowing this farmer to generate an income and put food on your table and mine.
The same process should apply here: enforce nuisance ordinances at all levels and seek solutions, while allowing the rest of us to generate income and provide opportunities for tourists who appreciate our beautiful county. . Is it that hard? Do not turn into a selfish community of NIMBY who want to build bridges.
