Macomb Charitable Foundation Seeks Volunteers For Food Drive | Local News
The Macomb Charitable Foundation is preparing for a drive-thru unlike any local restaurant – rather than picking up food, drive-thru attendees will donate it.
Macomb Charitable Foundation President Shelly Penzien said it was the first time the Macomb Township Foundation has organized a community-wide food drive.
The collection is scheduled to take place on May 15 from 9 a.m. to noon at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Macomb Township, located at 18201 23 Mile Road. It will benefit the pantries of the following local churches:
• Saint-Pierre Lutheran Church in Macomb Township, 17051 24 Mile Road
• Saint-Isidore Catholic Church in Macomb Township, 18201 23 Mile Road
• Immanuel Lutheran Church in Macomb Township, 47120 Romeo Plank
• The Lutheran Trinity Church in Utica, 45160 Van Dyke Avenue
“We chose these pantries because one is the original churches of our board members, secondly, we often send our families who need extra food to these pantries,” Penzien said. “We specifically use the baby pantry in St. Isidore.”
As the community-wide food drive will take place behind the wheel, donors will not need to get out of their vehicles. They will drive to the east end of the 23 Mile Road St. Isidore Catholic Church parking lot and exit at the west end of the 23 Mile Road parking lot.
“We will have volunteers on hand to greet the vehicles – the donors – when they arrive,” Penzien said. “Donors just need to blow up their trunk and one of our volunteers will unload any donation.”
Penzien is currently looking for 15-20 volunteers by May 3rd. Registration of volunteers is possible by contacting 586-232-3473 by phone or [email protected] by e-mail.
“We welcome volunteers of any age, as long as they can lift and carry boxes of donated food,” Penzien said. “No restriction on residential status.”
Penzien said all protocols and guidelines related to COVID-19 health and safety will be followed during the event.
“By asking donors to stay in their vehicles, we eliminate unnecessary contact,” Penzien said.
The Macomb Charitable Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting homeless and poor children or families in Macomb County. The organization helps with things such as rent and utilities, food, clothing, vehicle repairs, and personal care items.
“We wanted to do something to ‘give back’ to the community because it has been so supportive of our efforts to help the homeless children of Macomb,” said Penzien.
All donations are welcome, but community-wide food drive will especially need:
• gift cards for fresh fruit or meat
• Canned stew, chili or soup
• Long-life applesauce and juice
• Jelly and peanut butter
• dessert mixes and breakfast bars
• Pasta and pasta sauce
• Potatoes in bag or box
• Diapers, wipes and baby food
• canned rice and canned cereals
• canned vegetables, fruit, tuna or chicken
• Pancake and syrup mix
Donors are asked to check all donations before deposit to ensure that no donations have expired.
