Marquette DDA discusses the savings bank’s proposal
MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – The Marquette Downtown Development Authority is interested in learning more about major development projects at the corner of Front and Washington streets and two parking lots along Lakeshore Boulevard.
The promoters of Braveworks want to renovate the old building of the Savings Bank into a hotel and add commercial spaces, residential buildings and a public car park where there are currently private car parks.
If approved, Braveworks wants to reinvest its taxes in the project. The developers would use the taxes generated by the improvements to the property to pay for the environmental reclamation and new parking.
The promoters want the Marquette Downtown Development Authority to be a key element in the management and maintenance of the new parking structure.
PDD members said in a meeting Thursday morning that decisions on the project should not be rushed because it is so complex.
“I think it’s an awesome project, I think it would be really transformational from this block,” said Rebecca Finco, Executive Director of DDA. “I would like to see more of it throughout the validation of the project.”
Some of the DDA’s concerns included blocking views of Lake Superior and the affordability of new residential units.
The DDA has made no decision to approve or deny Braveworks’ request for the parking deal and plans to meet with the developers next month.
