The mayor of Ocean County Borough of Ocean Gate was charged Friday with official misconduct and theft, Ocean County District Attorney Bradley Billhimer announced.
Paul Kennedy, 66, who is the 10th mayor in Ocean Gate’s 104 year historywas charged following a thorough investigation by the Ocean County District Attorney’s Office Professional Standards/Corruption Unit and the Ocean County District Attorney’s Office Economic Crimes Squad, which found that allegedly engaged in illegal activities.
He is accused of failing to hand over the sale of the borough’s assets which were sold through the government’s auction website, GovDeals.com, and kept the money for himself.
Kennedy also allegedly failed to deposit funds from the borough’s parking meter into the borough’s bank account and sold borough office furniture through a private Facebook Marketplace account, and is accused of keeping the proceeds for himself as well. same here as well.
He was processed at the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office and released on a summons pending a future court date.
District Attorney Billhimer said the Ocean County District Attorney’s Office Professional Standards/Corruption Unit, the Ocean County District Attorney’s Office Economic Crimes Squad, the Ocean Gate Police Department and the of Ocean County Sheriff worked together on this investigation.
Ocean Gate Mayor Paul Kennedy and Ocean Gate Police Chief Mike Kutchta could not be reached for comment on Townsquare Media-Jersey Shore News.
