Sylvan Lake Food Truck Thursdays set to return with some changes – Sylvan Lake News
Food Truck Thursday is set to return this year, with some new changes.
At a recent Council meeting, the by-law on mobile sales and street traffic was proposed for amendment. The first reading of the amended by-law has been granted by Council, and the second and third readings are expected at the next meeting.
In 2020, the weekly summer event did not take place due to public health concerns arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The updated regulation will change the location of the Food Truck on Thursday “in accordance with health regulations due to COVID.”
“This would involve ensuring that there is sufficient room for social distancing with the assurance that the queues can be controlled without crossing,” the report told Council.
The north end of “Festival Street”, also known as 50A Street, was chosen as the new location for the event without blocking it off the street to traffic.
The city says there is enough space to allow social distancing in the queues, and is also providing nearby parking and public restrooms at Lakefront Park.
“The area can accommodate a minimum of five mobile sales units and would use nine paid parking spaces,” the report said.
Lakeland Plaza businesses are concerned that their parking lot will be used by those going to the event and not by customers. It’s been a constant concern for years, according to the city.
“To help alleviate parking issues for Lakeland Plaza, particularly during the Food Truck Thursday event, the city will be placing A-board signs at both entrances to Lakeland Plaza during the event. These signs will inform customers of the Food Truck Thursday event of available parking spaces. “
The city went on to say that by moving the event to the north end of Festival Street, it “will provide exposure to surrounding businesses and also attract potential new customers to those businesses.”
Food Truck Thursdays normally start in mid-May and run weekly throughout the summer.
However, given the current restriction in place not allowing indoor or outdoor dining, it is unclear what date will be given for the event to return.
