Why ‘tight’ and ‘passionate’ Wellow is one of the best places to live

Wellow has been applauded as one of the best places in the UK to settle in 2022. Our beautiful village has seen some of the strongest competitors in the South West – like Frome, Bruton and Bath – come out on top.

In a ‘best places’ guide compiled by The Sunday Times, ‘small and quaint’ Wellow punched above its weight to rival hotspots like Stroud, Dartmoor, Chalke Valley and Bridport. And he had enough to recommend it.

Like Live bath as readers know, the village store is a national treasure, being the oldest community store run by volunteers in the country. But that’s not all it has to offer.

Sunday Times reporter Cathy Hawker showered him with praise. She said: “This year we say goodbye Frome, goodbye Bruton – and never again Bath.

“Instead, with our apologies to the locals, we tip our hats to the village of Wellow, one of Britain’s best kept secrets.” Of course, although the people of Bath have long been aware of its appeal, it’s nice to see it making headlines.

And the villagers also come for a mention. They are described as “passionate, friendly, practical – and busy”, thanks to their love of volunteering, tennis and fundraising.

Who could forget the Wellow Energy Group which reduced the carbon footprint of homes in the village? Not to mention the fuel oil syndicate which allows the inhabitants to save precious money and prevent trucks from entering the village.

But the real draw for anyone hoping to visit has to be the Fox and Badger pub. Hawker spoke to James Hart, co-owner of the Lovell Stone Group, who said: “On a Friday night it can feel like the whole village is there.

“I can honestly say that I met more neighbors in my first six weeks at Wellow than in six years at Bath.” The play ended with a portrait of the “pale stone rural beauty” of the village.

Still, Hawker chose to conclude with an ode to Wellow’s “tight” persona. She calls it the “best place to live if you’re too grown up for bath time” – we couldn’t agree more.
